Useful, that led me to the solution. The problem was in nxhtml.el, my 
own module. This is for XHTML files. It modifies href attributes and 
makes them clickable so you more easily can move around when editing 
files. I have uploaded a new version.

At the startup of this mode there is an (nxml-do-fontify). That needed 
to be protected by (nxml-with-unmodifying-text-property-changes ...).
