autoconversion of entities

Hi there! I'm using nxml-mode from the tei-emacs package (contains
emacs 21.3 for Windows) to edit a TEI XML document, and I'm having
problems with the results of nxml-mode's autoconversion of entities.
When I initially edit the document, characters such as m dashes look
fine. However, when I reload the document, they are replaced by little
boxes, as if emacs doesn't know how to render them.

On disk, the document seems to be stored in UTF-8 - at least, that's
my guess, because it looks like a normal ASCII document except for
'codes' where the m dashes, accented characters, etc. go. If I load it
in Mozilla firefox, it renders correctly when I select Unicode
encoding. On the Mule menu, the coding system is described as
mule-utf-8-dos.

I've managed to switch off autocompletion of entries by changing my
Mule input method to british, but:

* emacs still shows the stuff I've typed in previously as little boxes
* i'd like to convert all 'high characters' back to entities if at all
possible.

Anyway advice on how to do this would be appreciated
