I put the files back in place, and re-grabbed the load-path variable:

load-path is a variable defined in `C source code'.

I should note, just in case I don't properly understand how things  
work, that to get the version of tramp, I did the following:

M-:
(require 'tramp)
=> tramp
M-:
(princ tramp-version)
=> 2.0.55

(I also checked using C-h v, but it was also 2.0.55 there.)
