1. Installing emacs-w3m from Fink. While the install is successful I cannot actually make use of the install in the /sw directory because Fink compiles it for an earlier version of Emacs in a different location.

This does not matter. Some (elder) version of GNU Emacs is needed to byte-compile Lisp code. A problem is that Elisp files are or some code is installed outside the standard load-path. This needs to be taken into account. (You can create a "local" version of the emacs- w3m.info file in /sw/fink/10.4/local/main/finkinfo, increase the version number also with an ``l´´, and change the configure parameters. Then re-build or re-install.)

I haven't built the package. To find out where files are installed you use

dpkg-deb -c /sw/fink/debs/emacs-w3m….deb

The ``…´´ will be completed in *shell* or Terminal.

2. Tried following directions in emacs-w3m README file to configure, make and install myself. This didn't work either as it also looked for an earlier version of Emacs. I'm not very proficient at reading CONFIG, MAKE or INSTALL files but I didn't see any opportunities to change the default value from emacs=EMACS to emacs=/Applications/Aquamacs\ Emacs.app/

The latter is wrong! The variable probably needs to point to / Applications/Aquamacs\ Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS/Aquamacs\ Emacs. Another option would be to set PATH to first contain /Applications/ Aquamacs\ Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS or /Applications/Aquamacs\ Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS/bin.
