Template.el

I'm trying to get template.el working with Aquamacs, and not having much
luck.

- It doesn't prompt me to use a template when I create a new buffer with
 C-x C-f, only when I explicitly use template-new-file.

- It won't use default templates, but insists on using TEMPLATE.bla.tpl
in the same directory as the file I'm creating. Only problem is that
there is no such template, while there is a default template.

Has anyone gotten this thing to work in a non-stupid way?
