This is certainly something to try - but it should not be necessary
if it's the PATH of the default login shell (bash or tcsh). This
shell is what comes up when one fires up Terminal.app. (I don't know
about xterm.)

Depending on how one starts xterm it may not be a login shell. In
fact, in general xterm will not launch with a login shell unless you
include the '-ls' argument. So, if bash is the shell, /etc/profile and
~/.bash_profile are not read, although .bashrc is. Which files does
Aquamacs read for setting the path?
