Yes, you did. When I am in this state I try to read (almost) all,  
hoping that something might stick that could help me in some future.  
Then the PDF version of a texinfo documentation is surely more helpful.

Have you seen the 'Automatic Customisation' node? Particularly the  
'Automatic Local' sub-node is the one that describes the meaning of  
the auto sub-directories in a directory with TeX files.
