BBDB RMAIL Expunge?

I'm using:
BBDB 2.34
Emacs 21.2
RMAIL

And I have the following problem: 

When I hit the x key, which is bound to bbdb/rmail-expunge, or the s
key, bound to bbdb/rmail-expunge-and-save, my mail file is saved but
the deleted messages are not removed from the mail file.

If I explicitly call 'rmail-only-expunge' then the messages are
removed.  I've combed through the info files but haven't found any
clues about this.  I'll readily admit that I have only just started
using the latest and greatest BBDB, having used a MUCH older one for
most of the past eight years.
