Subject: Preparing for WE Council elections -- help us draft the Governance By-laws

Hi everyone,

In the early days of WE, we set up an Interim International Advisory
Board as an interim step in setting up a community governance
structure. We made clear commitment that once 2500 users joined
WikiEducator we will hold democratic elections to elect a Successor
Board.

WE posted the beginnings of Governance Policy page inviting feedback
on key questions:

http://wikieducator.org/WikiEducator:Governance_Policy

You can read the discussions and feedback on the relevant talk page:

http://wikieducator.org/WikiEducator_talk:Governance_Policy

In summary:

There is growing consensus for a WE Council model. This model proposes
a council of 25 members. 15 members by open community election and 10
additional members to be appointed by the elected council members. The
purpose of the additional members is a mechanism to promote the
Commonwealth values of democracy, human rights, good citizenship and
good governance. For example gender equality and/or regional
representation on the Council. This will also enable the Council to
bring on board specialized skills.

Next steps:

1. Please add any thoughts or ideas you would like to contribute
before 11 February 2008 on the following talk page:

http://wikieducator.org/WikiEducator_talk:Governance_Policy

2. WE will then draft a proposed by-law/policy for the establishment
of the Council. This policy will also contain procedures for the
elections. The document will be open for comment by the WE community.

3. We will then proceed with our first elections.

Cheers
Wayne
