You could also put some instructions before the input box to the effect that
students should check that the page doesn't already exist by entering the
name of the page they wish to create in the search box to the left and click
"Go". If a page with that name already exists then they should choose
another name, if not, hit the back button on the browser and then enter the
name into the inputbox. There is also an option on this page for the
inputbox (
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Inputbox) called Search, so you can
also make a search box right on the page instead of relying on the one to
the left.
