Summary: Old journals for LA, MS areas affectd by Katrina: msg#00507education.libraries.medlib
Hi All, Some of you wanted a summary of my post regarding journals, books etc being donated to hurricane affected libraries. I received many responses to my post and below is the summary. MLA has devoted a Web page to all of relief efforts, $ and other: http://www.mlanet.org/hurricane_katrina.html . The latest issue of the NN/LM Southeaster/Atlantic region newsletter Has an article on a medical journal auction site that will help libraries damaged by hurricanes rebuild their collections. If you have journals to donate, or need journals, you might want to check it out: http://nnlm.gov/sea/seacurrents/2005/6/article3.php . Several people mentioned Pubzilla. Here are three websites regarding this: http://www.mlanet.org/hurricane_katrina.html , http://www.iknosys.com/ http://www.iknosys.com/html/charity.html . PubZilla offers "unlimited free use of its online auction site for donating medical journals to help restore the libraries affected by the 2005 hurricane season and other recent natural disasters." Here are a few more websites: http://www.state.lib.la.us/links/ http://www.ala.org/ala/alonline/hurricanekatrinanews/katrinanews.htm http://www.ala.org/ala/pressreleases2005/september2005/HurricaneKatrina. htm http://nnlm.gov/scr/blog/index.php?cat=6 . Lastly, someone suggested Absolute Backorder: Absolute Bookorder Inc. is offering affected libraries free replacement issues from their inventory. There are also developing a database where other libraries can offer duplicate journal issues to the affected libraries. http://www.absolute-inc.com/_/Hurricane_Katrina_Disaster_Recovery_Progra m/ I hope some of this will be of help. I am still in the process of getting my weeded journals list together and plan to post it through a few of these avenues in the next few weeks. Are any of you aware of replacement journal needs of those medical libraries in the Louisiana and Mississippi areas struck by Hurricane Katrina? We are in the process of weeding some of our older journals to make room for the coming year and I don't want to toss these, if they can be of use. I am a member of backmed and backserv, but thought I would check here first. Thank you, Tonia Tonia Harris, MLIS Research Librarian Knowledge Resource Center Premier Inc.
