WORLD LIBRARY AND INFORMATION CONGRESS: 72ND IFLA GENERAL CONFERENCE AND
COUNCIL

"Libraries: Dynamic Engines for the Knowledge and Information Society"
20-24 August 2006, Seoul, Korea
Call for Papers
Information Technology Section, with Audio-Visual and Multimedia
Section, in association with National Libraries Section
Theme:
"New Access Technologies:
Part 1 - Exploring the Heritage
Part 2 - Tomorrow’s Retrieval”

The overall theme of the 2006 World Library and Information Congress is
"Libraries: Dynamic Engines for the Knowledge and Information Society"
and our programme is focused on a range of new and exciting technical
developments that Libraries can exploit to improve access to audiovisual
and multimedia resources, which increasingly constitute the Knowledge
and Memory of modern nations, and yet are currently little recognized
and greatly under-used.

The high state of technological awareness in Korea coupled with its rich
and distinctive heritage would make Seoul the ideal location for a
session of this kind.

Proposals are invited for papers describing emerging technologies in
this field that deserve wider exposure and discussion by librarians,
including:
- XML search engines
- natural language processing
- faceted searching

Please send a detailed abstract (1 page or at least 300 words) of the
proposed paper (must not have been published elsewhere) and relevant
biographical information of author(s)/presenter(s), by 1st March 2005,
via email to:

Hanna de Vries deVries-vNipb5/TJXyEVqv0pETR8A@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The abstracts will be reviewed by members of the Standing Committees of
the two Sections. Successful proposals will be identified by 15th March
2006.

Full papers will be due by 15 April 2006 to allow time for review of
papers and preparation of translations; each full paper must be an
original submission not published elsewhere, and no more than 20 double
spaced A4 pages in length. The paper should be in one of the IFLA
languages (English, French, German, Spanish or Russian).

At least one of the paper’s Authors must undertake to be present to
present a summary of the paper (some 20 minutes) during the Section's
programme in Seoul. PLEASE NOTE that the expenses of attending the Seoul
conference (including travel, expenses and conference fee) will be the
responsibility of the author(s)/presenter(s) of accepted papers.
