Re: Improperly Configured Emilda/Yaz/Zebra?: msg#00011

Subject: Re: Improperly Configured Emilda/Yaz/Zebra?

YAZ error: 10000 (Connect failed) (Host:
       groucho.lib.rochester.edu:7090/voyager) (Query: ... [etc]

YAZ error 10000 (Connect Failed) means exactly what's in parenthesis. That server is not currently listening on the port you tried connecting to, or refused the connection for other reasons.

I assume that these have something to do with the Z3950 "stuff", but being a newbie to library managements systems in general, I'm not quite sure what exactly that is. I mean, I don't know why I should care about the Z39.50 protocol, nor why my Emilda software is trying to connect to the three specific servers above. How would I go about investigating the cause of these error messages? And also, are they even worth worrying about, if my library's management isn't too worried about inter-connectivity so long as the system is internally consistent?

When you add a book to your catalog, the system first checks your own zebra database for a match and then, if it's not found, there's a list of servers and port numbers in one of the configuration files (I don't remember which) of other, more authoritative servers to ask for information about the book. If you go through the entire list of servers and either don't get answers, or you get answers saying that they don't recognize the book, you're stuck entering the information manually.

In general, once you've got a working system, they're more informational messages than anything else.

Thanks again to all who responded! Very helpful, all around.

And I suppose it's true that they're more informational messages than anything else; but they are informational messages written in large, ominous red letters. :)

I think I understand the purpose/process now of the Z3950 implementation though, and it's definitely a great idea. But with these error messages on my system, I'm left with either trying to forcibly suppress them by commenting sections of code within Emilda/Zebra, or else trying to edit the list of servers/ports Zebra should be using to ask for information about new books. Any thoughts on where I should be looking for such a configuration file for Zebra? I've tried looking through documentation for Zebra online, without any luck. I've also tried looking through the zebra.cfg file, as well as most of the files in the "tab/" subdirectory, for any mention of servers/ports, also without any luck. All thoughts are appreciated.

Cheers,
- Jeremy Porter
