is there a way to link a serials index?: msg#00005

Subject: is there a way to link a serials index?
Background:

A few months ago I offered to create an index database of periodical articles
for a small library. I'm a librarian and this was to be a volunteer good deed.
The indexing end has gone well, but it is a number of years since I've done
much with databases so...

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to me, someone else was working with the same library
and several other affiliated libraries on creating a computerized catalog
system. Eventually, completely unaware, I contacted the catalog builder to ask
if he could help me out on the periodical database.

We have now joined forces. I am providing library expertise (explaining, for
example, what a Marc record is, and what sort of stuff goes into it) while he
concentrates on finding a suitable catalog system.

Emilda looks great for the catalog. My question is twofold.

First, several libraries are going to be part of this system. There will be a
lot of overlap of materials. Is there a simple way to catalog multiple runs of
the same periodical? Library "A" has volumes 1-6, library "B" has volumes 3-7
and so on and on and on.

Second, has anyone tried to combine Emilda with an index of journal articles?
We'd like to have some sort of link so that a search would find both books and
articles on any given topic.

I'll be happy to supply more information on the project, if more is needed, or
to bring in the database maven, if technical information is needed.

Thanks,
Deborah
