Subject: NCTE article and lesson plan

I belong to a group called the NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English).
Every month I get a newsletter with lots of useful articles and lesson plans.
Some can be adapted to teaching EFL.

Two pieces that I thought I would share are:

1. This is an article giving 50 alternatives to book reports; there are some
good, creative ideas.

2. This is a lesson plan on how to write a review. The lesson focuses on a
book review, but I feel it can be adapted to a movie review. When I was
teaching in Wuhan, I taught several lessons on writing movie reviews. I thought
this subject was rather successful with my college-aged students as they all
really loved watching foreign movies. The lesson included watching a movie in
English, in-class discussion and later a writing assignment. I felt it covered
a lot of levels of communication, I offered several "showings" throughout the
month and the students had to choose one movie on which to write their review
(this was an atempt to prevent them from watching the movie in Chinese). I had
to pre-teach the movies also to make sure they understood the plot of the movie.

Look around this site a little. There are other really good lessons that can
be adapted to the EFL classroom.
