>http://www.ic.arizona.edu/lsp/IPA/SSAE.html This link doesn't work on my computer. However, if you check natlunla.org there may be a simpler explanation of why I say there are 10 simple vowel sounds in Standard American English. I can use them with students from Primary 3 on up. They work really well in dictation. The students use the 36 symbols in fun and challenging dictation exercises. I have the IPA in highest regard, but I'm thinking maybe an International Phonemic Association would be more pertinent in second/foreign language teaching, occasionally tweaking IPA characters to pragmatically suit a particular language in XFL environments.
