Nelson, the vowel sound in 'luck" and "duck" is not a
schwa, it's the upsidedown v symbol. The initial vowel
sound in 'again' is a a schwa and is similar to the
sound in 'luck" and "duck" but not the same.I often
have difficulty in hearing the difference between
three vowel sounds, the two I mentioned above and the
one in "put" the curly u looking one (sorry I don't
know their proper names). However, my students do
indeed hear the difference and if you put them in the
wrong place, then I hear the difference clearly,
particularly in longer words.
I can't pronounce them individually very well, apart
from the schwa which I can, but I guess the point is
that they are 3 different sounds given 3 different
symbols in IPA for good reasons.
