Russ Taylor asks, Mert, in a country where their own dialects and accents are largely incomprehensible to other Chinese people, how do you suggest that we achieve a satisfactory level of comprehension if we do not have them following some recognisable standard of internationally accepted English? I'm interested to hear your thoughts on this. But what recognizable standard of intenationally accepted Englsih do you propose, Russ? I do love listening to tapes of Winston Churchill, but would not suggest that everyone speak like him. I maintain that RP is not that standard, nor is Midwestern, nor is 'Stryne. Perhaps we can all agree that everyone should sound like me? Since, as I maintain, there are too many standards, perhaps the student should sound like his countrymen, as long as he can be understood by as many others using English who are not his countrymen.
