For me the confusion and difficulty with truespel is that it does not
replicate connected speech, it deals with words in isolation. 

Take this example from the Truespel site:

"That kwik baezh faaks jumpd in thu air oever eech thhin daug. Look
out,  ie shout,  for heez foild yue uggen."

"thu" should be "thee" since it is followed by a vowel but it is a
shorter "ee" than in "heez".

Truespel also confuses u in up and the schwa, using the same symbol
for both.
