Americans Overestimate the Number of English SpeakersAmericans believe that 
over 50% of the world speaks English. Actually, the number is closer to 20%. 
According to this Harris Interactive poll, perceptions are quite different that 
facts:  
 ...That fact that Americans believe more than half the world speaks English 
helps explain our linguistic myopia, which is reflected in the relatively low 
interest in foreign language study in this country.   Here are some statistics 
on the number of English students worldwide, as well as the overall global
