NST School Sponsorship Programme: All out to promote use of English

KUALA PILAH: Selected as a model school by the Education Ministry, SMK
Batu Kikir is, without a doubt, special, particularly in its efforts
to promote the English language.

The school, which receives 27 copies of the New Straits Times daily
under the NST School Sponsorship Programme, believes in using the
newspaper to the fullest.

The newspaper is made available in a common area for students.

English language teachers are encouraged to use the
Newspaper-In-Education programme kit.

English teacher Zainiah Sharif, who conducts the programme with Form
Four and Lower Six students, said they had shown tremendous
improvement in their English.

"By using the NST, they have developed their reading, writing and
speaking skills," she said.

Another English teacher, Ramjan Bibi Mehar Din, said the NST programme
had been useful for Form Four students in providing reading and
research material for the English for Science and Technology paper.

The programme also helps Lower Six students prepare for the Malaysian
University English Test (MUET).

Zainiah and Ramjan hoped more sponsors would come forward to support
the NST programme as many schools lacked additional teaching material
of good quality.

The school has set up an NIE corner in the canteen to highlight the
latest local and foreign news.

The NST is also used during the assembly on Wednesdays, a day
designated for English.
