Re: Double Positives: msg#00079education.english.belajar-english
In Spanish (in Spain) ist's similar. An example: A fisherman says to another: "Ayer agarré un salmón de 8 kgs." and the listener says with a big, cynical smiling: "Sí, sí." and the first fisherman will get angry because he realized the second fishernan don't believe him. But it's due because you say a sentence but you're thinking the opposite. In Spanish if you say twice a word (a noun) rou're meaning the good one. Example: ¿Quieres un café café, no un café de máquina automática como el que estás tomando? Te invito. But if you say "Sí, sí" you're doubting waht are you're listening. Bruce <bruceem@xxxxxxxxx> escribió: Letirose and all-- The meaning of "Yeah, right" can depend on the context and on the timing and the tone of voice the speaker uses, but usually it means, "I don't believe you" or "I doubt that what you are saying is true." So in the humorous example given, 'Yeah, right" is portrayed as an instance when two words that separately are affirmations become, when used together, a disaffirmation or denial.
