E-Tips from Road to Grammar
(www.roadtogrammar.com)

Hello everybody,

Did you know that many words in English come from Latin and Greek? We can
sometimes examine the Latin and Greek roots of words to find out the meaning.

For example:

tele- = far
vis- = view

So we can form the word television.

Other words with tele- are telephone, telescope, telecommute and teleconference.

Other words with vis- are visor, vision, vista and revise.

Here are some more common roots in English:

-port = to carry (portable, porter)
re- = again (review, rewind)
-phon- = sound (telephone, phonetics)
therm- = heat (thermometer, thermal)
trans- = across (transfusion, transport)
un- = not (uncomfortable, unlikely)
en-, -en =make (enlarge, widen)
