Thanks a lot, Zunilda, for answering my e-mail.
Reading your mail, I remember my childhood. When I was an
elementary school student, I learned about Panama Canal and
Suez Canal at the social science class. I was very impressed to
learn how much time could be spared thanks to these canals.
By the way, in Japan there are many places named
?gFuna-koshi?h, which means ?gto cross carrying the ship?h.
Such places as has the name, ?gFuna-koshi?h, is 
topographically situated at just like Panama; the place where
the sea divided by narrow land. Ancient Japanese sailors
crossed the land carrying their ship, so that these places were
named ?gFunakoshi?h.
Nowadays, it may be impossible to carry the ship to cross the
land, but I suppose that in ancient times ships were enough
small for several Japanese sailors to cross the land carrying
them.
