I`m Tanya from Ukraine.
I`m the English teacher but not a native speaker.
As I was taught and understand correctly the meaning of your sentence
the Past Continuous should be used here to describe the simultaneous
action.
But if Someone of native speakers corrects it I`ll be grateful.
