Surely "and" and "the" were correct?

I
read with sober mien the words of a 22-year old "Jesuit-educated"
gentleman who averred of the book that it "made him think".

I believe that was the expression used by the one friend I know who's
read it and who's mentioned it to me. I bit my tongue, smiled, and
e-mailed her some reviews the next day.
