Start reading Gibbon or being excommunicated?

I was already well along in the former -- and didn't really care much
about
the latter ... even at that tender and impressionable age (right) --
so one
could say it was the start of another kind of learning process: about
the
constitution, source, and relevance of authority.

Which is exactly the lesson one would wish the public commentary on DVC
would provide, not simply an opportunity for evangelization. Of course,
I see this as a matter of standards of proof and (as LMM so well
expressed it) relevance of authority, while the commentators in
question no doubt saw it as a matter of theological scandal.
