Many thanks for the help and ideas (some responses below). I'm happy enough that I know how to get it working even if opening or creating a file from a command line doesn't seem to work. I have to say I'm really liking vim, I started off in BBEdit, played with Textmate and Smultron and then realised everything I ever needed was there all along.
