Many thanks for the help and ideas (some responses below). I'm happy enough that I know how to get it working even if opening or creating a file from a command line doesn't seem to work.

I have to say I'm really liking vim, I started off in BBEdit, played with Textmate and Smultron and then realised everything I ever needed was there all along. Plus 90% of the time I'm working remotely in a shell anyway. I'll be a lot better as soon as I start to remember the commands.

Cheers,

Si

This had no effect.

I believe I had the same problem when I installed the snippetsEMU plugin on my windows box at work, and IIRC the way I got around it was that the vimball puts all of the filetype snippet files in ~/.vim/after/ftplugin, and I just moved them into ~/.vim/ftplugin; i.e. I was having problems with things being in the "after" directory.

Also no effect.
