I suggest that you don't rely too much on the external websites. The
websites usually aim to collect as much information as possible, even if
it's obsolete. The software authors attempt to make the software easy
to use with minimal documentation.
The current version of orinoco_usb doesn't distinguish variant 1 and
variant 2. It's fully transparent to the user.

It is possible, but support for 2.4 kernels was removed from the current
drivers, so you may need to check the history for the removed parts.
