Hi Friends,
I am a graduate student at Utah State University and am working on a
robotics project that requires my orinoco classic gold card to passively
monitor the wireless network in rfmon mode under windows(xp). I can do that
in linux using kismet. However Linux has power issues so we would like to
use windows(xp). I was wondering if there are any windows(xp) drivers that
allow rfmon mode. If there are then how can I get the driver and its API. If
there are not, then can I get driver programmer's manual so that I can write
a windows driver for it. I understand that writing a driver is not a trivial
task. But I am a student and would love to learn new skills.
Sincerely,

Subject: Re: [Orinoco-devel] monitor mode and 8.xx firmware

Pavel could answer this better that I can, since he did the monitor
mode merge. But, I believe the problem is that *most* of the time
monitor mode works fine on the 8.xx firmwares, but occasionally it
falls over very, very nastily. Pavel made the judgement that it was
safer to disable it entirely than to risk the bad failure mode.
Correct. Also, it would be incorrect to interpret it as a regression in
the
driver. The unofficial patches were never applied completely. The part
that
was applied has no specific workarounds for 8.xx firmware. The workaround
was
to reset the firmware on channel change. Maybe it's working perfectly for
others, but it wasn't nearly perfect for me. AirSnort with channel
scanning
would eventually cause interrupt storm in the 8.xx firmware even with
resets on
channel change.
If anybody wants 8.xx workarounds to be in the driver, please send a
tested
patch. Testing should include running AirSnort with channel scanning for
at
least one hour.
