Re: code for Wireless Distribution system: msg#00010

Subject: Re: code for Wireless Distribution system
hello,
thanks for your explaination.
So we can implement WDS without any support from the firmware as done in HostAP code .
HostAP code creates virtual interface for each of added wds link and it has to be added into bridge for correct operation . Am I right?

Here is one question . Suppose there are three APs A,B,C. A has established wds links with B and C. When A's associated client wants to talk with client of B then it will send packets to AP A. now how AP A will know to where to forward packet? Does AP A will send packets to both AP B and C using virtual interface or dircetly sends packet to AP B?

who makes decision to where to forward the packet ?bridge code or HostAP driver? Or does each AP exchange list of associated clients among themselves when making WDS links?

Please give some clarification on this issue.
thanks in advance
manisha

You didn't provide the link where you read it. As far as I know, port 0
is used for most operations, port 7 is used for packets received in
monitor mode and ports 1-6 are used for WDS, but only by tertiary
firmware. To use them, you need a driver that supports Intersil tertiary
firmware, and the only such driver is linux-wlan-ng. And even then, I
don't thing linux-wlan-ng supports WDS because I don't s ee code to set the
MAC port for transmission.

I think you are taking a wrong approach. Instead of pursuing real goals
(like WDS support), you are asking how to do something that cannot be done
by definition (emulation of WDS ports in software).

For your information, HostAP driver supports WDS without "implementing"
WDS ports. Orinoco driver doesn't support WDS and master mode at all.

Tertiary firmware is not documented well.

If you really need WDS ports, you probably should continue this discussion
in linux-wlan-devel-cunTk1MwBs+rl3Moja82AxTTglE0JFCO@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx At least linux-wlan-ng has some
support for tertiary firmware.
