Hello Peter

(I'm using Outlook unfortunately, so I'll top-quote, I'm evil that way).

you have two different machines using the same IP address or some broken
SNAT or similar networking problem. The other state that you describe is
a Windows machine, the other is your knoppix (the one with ssh). Change
knoppix IP. If you're using DHCP for knoppix, then your DHCP environment
is broken.

ak.

Subject: [debian-knoppix] Weird port switching?

Greetings --

I just ran Knoppix 3.2-2003-03-30-EN and installed it on the harddrive,
with great success; this simplifies the installation process enormously.
All the hardware appears to be correctly configured.

and blah blah blah from hereon. top-quotes are evil.

some problems

hi everybody i just kicked my SuSE 8.2 and gave knoppix (3.2) a try. well, actually for the second time. installation wasn't a big deal. since i had my home-dirs and other data on separate partitions i could start working right away. that was great. but there are some question i still have. e.g.: what is the equivalent to insserv? i think it should be update-rc.d, but i don't have a manpage for it. could someone give me the correct command-line for starting lets say spamassassin in runlevels 2,3 and 5? also (as earlier with knoppix 3.1) i haven't been able yet to use my tv-card hauppauge WinTV PCI with BT 848. it seems to be recognized, but does not work with either motv or xawtv. what is going wrong there? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ xawtv This is xawtv-3.88, running on Linux/i686 (2.4.20-xfs) Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-ledfixed-medium-r-*--39-*-*-*-c-*-*-*" to type FontStruct Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0". ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ mic@kabuff:~$ motv This is motv-3.72, running on Linux/i686 (2.4.20-xfs) Warning: Actions not found: Remote Warning: Actions not found: Remote ERROR: plugin magic mismatch [xawtv=20020118,libng/plugins/flt-gamma.c=537067817] ERROR: plugin magic mismatch [xawtv=20020118,libng/contrib-plugins/linear-blend.c=537067817] ERROR: plugin magic mismatch [xawtv=20020118,libng/contrib-plugins/flt-smooth.c=537067817] ERROR: plugin magic mismatch [xawtv=20020118,libng/contrib-plugins/cubic.c=537067817] ERROR: plugin magic mismatch [xawtv=20020118,libng/plugins/drv1-v4l.c=537067817] ERROR: plugin magic mismatch [xawtv=20020118,libng/plugins/write-qt.c=537067817] ERROR: plugin magic mismatch [xawtv=20020118,libng/plugins/drv0-v4l2-old.c=537067817] ERROR: plugin magic mismatch [xawtv=20020118,libng/plugins/flt-disor.c=537067817] ERROR: plugin magic mismatch [xawtv=20020118,libng/contrib-plugins/linedoubler.c=537067817] dlopen: /usr/lib/xawtv/drv0-v4l2.so: undefined symbol: ng_tofday_to_timestamp dlopen: /usr/lib/xawtv/read-avi.so: undefined symbol: ng_malloc_audio_buf dlopen: /usr/lib/xawtv/read-dv.so: undefined symbol: ng_malloc_audio_buf dlopen: /usr/lib/xawtv/read-qt.so: undefined symbol: ng_malloc_audio_buf dlopen: /usr/lib/xawtv/snd-oss.so: undefined symbol: ng_malloc_audio_buf ERROR: plugin magic mismatch [xawtv=20020118,libng/contrib-plugins/bilinear.c=537067817] ERROR: plugin magic mismatch [xawtv=20020118,libng/plugins/write-avi.c=537067817] ERROR: plugin magic mismatch [xawtv=20020118,libng/plugins/flt-invert.c=537067817] ERROR: plugin magic mismatch [xawtv=20020118,libng/plugins/conv-mjpeg.c=537067817] no video grabber device available ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ one other thing is: with suse i used ./configure, make and checkinstall for compiling and installing my progs. is there a equivalent to checkinstall? or how do i make sure, that self-compiled progs are taken into the package-database? normally i use fluxbox, but when using kde or kde-apps under fluxbox like kate or kwrite i have strange fonts for displaying text. and whatever i configure in the appearance-tab of the controlcenter it shows no effect for unpriviled users. no problem with root though... any hints? cheers Michael -- Linux - because life is too short for reboots Michael Kaiser http://www.kaiser-detmold.de

Or it there an easier way? Thanks for the help and for the good work! Cheers!

Weird port switching?

Greetings -- I just ran Knoppix 3.2-2003-03-30-EN and installed it on the harddrive, with great success; this simplifies the installation process enormously. All the hardware appears to be correctly configured. However, the machines exhibits some really weird behavior with ports. It appears to cycle between two states, details below. Only one of the states has an open ssh port, so I get routinely kicked off in the middle of working on it. After cutting me off, it will eventually cycle back to the state with an ssh port and let me in again. I've even had the machine show one state to one machine, and another state to another, at the same time. What is going on? It's obviously not random behavior, but where is it controlled, and is this a design feature or a bug? Best, Peter PS. Please cc me as I'm not subscribed. The most frequent state is this one: Starting nmap 3.20 ( www.insecure.org/nmap/ ) at 2003-04-30 23:35 PDT Interesting ports on kutu: (The 1605 ports scanned but not shown below are in state: closed) Port State Service 135/tcp open loc-srv 139/tcp open netbios-ssn 445/tcp open microsoft-ds 497/tcp open dantz 1025/tcp open NFS-or-IIS 5000/tcp open UPnP Nmap run completed -- 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 0.421 seconds The second state is this one: Starting nmap 3.20 ( www.insecure.org/nmap/ ) at 2003-04-30 22:58 PDT Interesting ports on kutu: (The 1606 ports scanned but not shown below are in state: closed) Port State Service 22/tcp open ssh 111/tcp open sunrpc 139/tcp open netbios-ssn 631/tcp open ipp 934/tcp open unknown
