I tried downgrading tetex-bin and re-upgrading to 1.0.7+20021025-3,
and that didn't help.
I then tried re-installing jadetex (to the same version, 3.12-2) and
it magically started working again. I don't know if this information
helps you understand what's happening (it doesn't mean much to me, but
I know next to nothing about TeX...).
