One thing that helps is to open the alias properties and set it to only load the schema(s) that you will use. Also, it really helps to tell it not to load procedures. Those can take a very long time to load. Beyond that, doing a query that returns 100+ rows does seem to take a long time to load the data into the table. I have not found a workaround for that.
