Some forms specify a file path to the actual database files, and in that mode, the database is running "in-memory" or "embedded". Usually, only one JVM can access the database files at a time in this mode. The exception to this is the "Network Server" mode which has a JVM listen for requests on a port, allowing connections from multiple other JVMs. It, however, must be the only JVM that accesses the database files "in-memory".
