So, now we have some more details, maybe someone who also owns a MIPS 
box can do some tests... 

Why are you are so spare giving us information? Do you really expect 
that somebody can help you with this little input? What kind of MIPS? 
A SGI Indy? A handheld? Why didn't you use autoconf? What is with the 
filesystem? Local or remote? Which filesystem? The only way to help 
you is to reproduce your problem...

As I wrote in my previous mail: With that little information you give 
us NO ONE CAN HELP YOU!
