That's why I use checkinstall - great little thing for doing a 'make install', then creating an rpm out of the result. Uninstall is then as simple as removing any other rpm. The resultant rpm isn't "clean", because the dependency info etc. is absent, but it's perfect for tracking installs of software you compile yourself. I couldn't say for sure, but checkinstall is probably part of your distro.
