Re: Memory allocation for postmaster service..: msg#00161

Subject: Re: Memory allocation for postmaster service..
Would anyone else have any suggestions related to this topic? Despite my
efforts, I never seem to get PostgreSQL to use the indexes - whether or not
that would signficantly change the performance seems doubtful to me, as I'm
not using particularly complex queries yet.

I would still like to know if it's possible to increase the memory allocated
to the postmaster service...with a server that has 1 Gig of ram, allocating
more 4MB to the service seems reasonable to me.

Kind regards,
Mike

Memory allocation could be the issue, but first try looking at your indexes.
That almost always solves any speed issues for me. If you haven't yet, try
EXPLAIN ANALYZE.

I?m just wondering if it?s possible to increase the allocation of memory to
the postmaster service. I?m running PosgreSQL with PostGIS, and sometimes
running a map query on multiple objects from Mapserver can take a very long
time with the CPU running at 100%. I?m hoping increasing the memory
allocation would improve the performance...

Kind regards,
Mike

TIP 4: Don't 'kill -9' the postmaster
