Client unable to connect to server

I'm attempting to have a client connect to my server. Both are running 
on the same Win95 workstation. The server is from the mysql.com binary 
distribution. The client is using cygwin compiled libraries. I keep 
getting "Error 2002 (Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket 
'MySQL' (2))". The client is attempting to connect through socket 
'MySQL' and port 3306.
