DBD::mysql failing commit test for transactions

Greetings

I am trying to get mysql to work with a perl interface that fails with an error 
message about transactions not being enabled. I have gone back to the DBD 
driver and tried the test there and get:

I am using v3.0003 with perl 5.8.5 on a Dell PowerEdge 6850 with RedHat 
Enterprise V4. I have DBI v1.50. I compiled mysql from source with 
--with-innodb at configure. SHOW ENGINES shows that innodb is enabled. 
Shouldn't I be able to support transactions with this? Can anyone offer any 
suggestions how to isolate the problem?
