problem with myodbc's authentication

I'm sorry if this question is very trivial.  But I just started w/
mysql and I'm trying to the server from Excel using myodbc.  However,
I can't access the database even when i provide a user name and
password (... the "root" no less!)...

Actually, I'm trying to connect another application (Acuity for microarray
analysis/database) to MySql server.  I'm trying to avoid paying $4000.  

I've performed grant all privileges on all my two usernames, and still
no effect.  One caveat: when using the "test" database with no
username/password, testing the connection works fine.  In fact, I've even
been able to create a table in the test database.  So, how come I can only
access mysql through myodbc using only the anonymous account? 
Unfortunatley, the Acuity software does not allow anonymous connections
(or, blank user/password fields).

I'm using mysql 4.1.
