[details snipped] > The test-machine is a P4 3GHz machine with 1G RAM and a 320GB ATA disk > running Debian GNU/Linux "testing" and Linux kernel 2.6.8 with support > for hyperthreading. The database has 4 x 500 GB raw devices + 1 60 GB > raw device for the log (maxdb refused to accept one 200 GB > raw device). If 4 x 500 is a typo and you mean 4 x 50 (what would meet the 200 mentioned): Do I understand right, that the machine has a single hard disk? Maybe not so crucial for your described load process, but separating data volumnes from log volumes is an important performance issue. Another point is, only count the physical CPU cores for the MAXCPU parameter of MaxDB.
