MaxDB problems working in ORACLE mode with embedded SQL in C/C++ programs: msg#00190

Subject: MaxDB problems working in ORACLE mode with embedded SQL in C/C++ programs
Dear reader,

My company is seriously interested in working with MaxDB as an ORACLE
alternative for the development of our internet products on UNIX and LINUX
servers.

It is our first serious contact with this MaxDB product and of course we have
some problems with the implementation and our test environment in ORACLE mode
that initially needs to be resolved before my company wants to spend money for
licensing and support contracts.

At the following I want to comment some issues that have to do with this
implementation and tests we made with MaxDB.

▪ The user manual of MaxDB only give some generic instructions and
procedures about installing, configuration and implementation of solutions but
when I needed to have some specific implementation details or examples about
importing ORACLE exports, working in ORACLE mode, advanced pre-compiler options
for embedded SQL statements in C programs, the link libraries that should be
used to create our test runtimes. I could not find them in this manual, neither
in the proper web site of MySql (www.mysql.com <http://www.mysql.com/> ).

Of course this seems to be a secondary problem because once decided to work
with MaxDB, it will be necessary to be formed in the product. Also a support
contract will it make easier to get fixed solutions for installation and
implementation problems.

▪ Once create the source file for our test program in C with embedded
SQL statements, after pre-compiling this source file in ORACLE and after the
creation of the corresponding runtime, there is no way to get our test program
connected to the database instance of MaxDB on the local server.

Of course this seems to be the most important problem of all, because this is
the only way to confirm to my company that the MaxDB solution I proposed can
get working, of course pending some other tests and correction that we will
have to make to the sources of our products programs. It is obvious that my
company doesn’t want to spend money for a product that doesn’t seem to work
fine in one of his basic functions, connecting to the database instance.

It isn’t my intention to tell that MaxDB doesn’t work with this kind of
implementations; probably there are some details (configuration, pre-compiler
options, used link libraries, SQL connect statement, environment variables)
that I didn’t take care of, also because of the documentation where I couldn’t
find detailed examples for this kind of implementation, and if I found
something what look liked detailed specifications, paging to the user manual I
had to leave this investigations because of the many options that appeared by
using the links switching from one page to the other.

Please contact with me for the installation and test implementation details;
because of your mail size limit I couldn’t include this information in the same
mail.

Best regards,
