connection.GetSchema("Columns") doesn't return default

I'm trying to get the default values for the columns in my database. I 
can get column names and types through the 
connection.GetSchema("Columns") method. The schema of the table returns 
includes "COLUMN_DEFAULT", but the value it returns is always a 
zero-length string. Any ideas how to get this value?
And, once I get the value, is there an easy way to commit a change to it 
back to the database?
