Subject: Re: recording voice issues
Well, sound recording is a hassle, no matter how you do it.

First up, you sound card is (presumably) in your PC, right next to fans and HDD, which, of course, have motors. Those motors do murder to the quality of the sound you record...

Next, you're (presumably) using 1/8" plugs, which are, if nothing else, noisy.

What you might want to do is much like the filtering done on phone lines, i.e. remove lower and higher frequency bands.
The frequencies for voice are in the midrange.
There are a number of pro sound editors that do this with EQ.

Sadly, I do a lot of semi-pro recording, so I don't much use simplified software.
But anything with an EQ will do.

of course, a scriptable software would remove much hassle as you might be able to automate the EQ and save procedure...

Sorry that I can't be of any more help than that.
I guess the key thing I wanted to say here is that you need to remove high (hiss) frequencies and low (rumble, like ventilation and vans passing nearby) frequencies.

You might the need to amplify the EQed waveform. That should be the easy part.

Right now I am working with Windows 98 in a lab for students but soon will be working with FM7 on XP.

My concern is with Sound Recorder in Windows which students will use to record sound files during language learning exercises that will be stored..

The problem is the hiss and buzz that always seems to come when working with Sound Recorder. Using a normal, typical headsets with a mic (in fact, I have tried several different sets), I always get unwanted machine like noise. I have tried several different machines.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how to deal with this noise without creating a special environment? I also wonder if anyone has any ideas for techniques or software for recording voice that is easily called by FM and stored easily using a few script steps?

Tx,
Jon
