=========================== Preliminary Call for Papers =========================== The 9th International Database Engineering and Application Symposium Montreal, Canada July 25-27, 2005 Conference Web site: http://www.cs.concordia.ca/ideas/ideas2005 The aim of the IDEAS series of symposiums is to address the engineering and application aspects of databases. The symposium provides an international forum for discussion of the problems of engineering database systems involving not only database technology, but also the related areas of information retrieval, multimedia, human machine interface and communication. The goal of IDEAS is to foster closer interaction among the industrial, research and user communities and provides an excellent opportunity for them to meet, discuss ideas, examine the current ones and develop new solutions and research directions. Along with the technical sessions, the symposium also features prominent invited speakers. IDEAS series of symposiums are scheduled annually and have been held since 1997 in North America, Europe and Asia. It has attracted participants from governmental and non-governmental agencies, industries, and academia to exchange ideas and share experiences. IDEAS 2005 will return to Montreal, Canada, and will be held in the new building of the CS Department of Concordia University. Montreal is a wonderful place to live and to study. A gateway to North America, its typical New World vitality blends perfectly with its unique approach to life. It is a bilingual city where you will hear French and English spoken everywhere, along with some 35 other languages and many well-established cultural communities, from Italian to Chinese, Greek and Spanish-speaking. The city's international flavour is a definite asset for multinationals and organizations, many of which have chosen to locate their head offices here. In fact, 70 organizations and 80 international financial centres, including the World Trade Centre Montreal, the International Civil Aviation Organization and the Societe Internationale de Telecommunications Aeronautiques (SITA), all call Montreal home. Montreal is the second-largest aerospace city in the world, and eighth in North America in the biopharmaceuticals sector. With its four universities, Montreal has more university students per capita than any other North American city. Montreal is a city of festivals and summer is the peak season for it with numerous international events including international jazz, La Mondial SAQ, Juste pour rire/Just for laugh, Les FrancoFolies, Dragon Boat Race, Nuits d'Afrique. IDEAS 2005 invites quality papers describing original ideas and new findings on applied technological and theoretical aspects of database engineering and applications. In particular we welcome submissions describing work on integrating new technologies into products and applications, on experiences with existing and novel techniques, and on the identification of unsolved challenges. We consider this symposium to be a unique and important forum to discuss experiences in applying databases to actual situations. You are invited to submit original technical papers in English reporting recent results in database and related fields. Both research papers and experience and application papers are welcome. While research papers should report original research work, experience and application papers should describe the development and operations of challenging database related systems and applications. Full length papers and short papers are invited: the topics of interest within the scope of the conference include, but are not restricted to: Access Methods and Data Structures Active Databases Authorisation and Database Security Benchmarking Bioinformatics and Databases Concurrency Control and Recovery Constraint Databases Data Grids Data Integration Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery Data Models Data Stream Processing Data Visualisation Data Warehousing Database Applications Database Design and UML Database Evolution and Migration Database Performance Database Query Languages Database Programming Languages Databases and Electronic Commerce Databases and Information Retrieval Database System Functionality as Service Distributed and Parallel Databases Genomic Databases Interoperability and Cooperative Systems Internet/Intranet Services and Databases Knowledge Base Management Systems Logic and Databases Medical Information Systems Mobile Computing and Database Systems Moving Object Databases Multimedia Database Systems Ontology Development for Database Applications Peer-to-Peer Data Management Performance Evaluation Query Processing and Optimization Real-Time Database Systems Replication and Caching Scientific and Statistical Databases Semantic Web and Databases Semi-structured Databases and XML Spatial and Temporal Databases Transactional Guarantees in Databases Tertiary Storage for Databases Text Databases and Digital Libraries User and Application Interfaces View Management Workflow Management and Databases Web Search and Navigation IMPORTANT DATES: Paper submission deadline: February 18, 2005 Acceptance notice: April 16, 2005 Camera-ready copies due: May 14, 2005 Conference dates: July 25-27, 2005 (Please visit the conference Web site for further instructions) PUBLICATION: The conference proceedings is to be published by IEEE Computer Society.
