PAPER SUBMISSION
APWeb'05 invites full papers describing original contributions in all fields of
Internet
and WWW related research and applications. A submission should be no more than
25 pages
double spacing (about 5000 words), including all figures. Each paper will be
fully
refereed by a program committee and judged on its originality, significance,
technical quality,
relevance to APWeb'05 as well as presentation. All submissions should be in
English.
Submission of a paper should be regarded as an undertaking that, should the

The goal of the Symposium is to bring together leading researchers in advanced technology and leading thinkers from the law and policy arenas to consider together the promise and perils that recent and upcoming technological innovations hold for privacy. We encourage submissions of contributed papers or works in progress in the three main areas covered by the invited panels but will also accept contributions on other topics related to privacy and identity in information technology. The three main areas for submission are: - Data mining and aggregation - RFID and location tracking - Biometrics & face recognition The Symposium will feature two keynote presentations, three panels of invited speakers composed of leading technologists and leading thinkers about law and policy, and parallel sessions of contributed extended abstracts and works-in-progress on privacy-related technical and legal topics. Each presentation in the parallel sessions will be allotted 20 minutes. You should plan your presentation for no more than 15 minutes to allow time for discussion. The contributed paper sessions will be divided into technical sessions and law and policy sessions. Many of the invited presentations will be published as part of a Symposium Book to be published by Kluwer Publishing after the symposium. Some contributed papers may be selected for publication in the Symposium Book. Information about page limitations and format will be provided to those whose papers are selected for publication. We also plan to make presentations and extended abstracts available on the symposium's web site after the symposium, whether or not they are selected to be included in the book. Important Dates: ---------------- - September 8th, 2004: Submission of extended abstracts (500-1500 words) - September 15th, 2004: Notification of acceptance - January 1st, 2005: Camera Ready Manuscripts for the Symposium Book (for a few selected papers) Keynote Speakers & Invited Panelists: ------------------------------------- Niro Lecturer: Professor Pamela Samuelson, Professor of Law and Information Management; Chancellor's Professor; Director, Berkeley Center for Law & Technology; University of California, Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law Dinner Speaker: Thomas R. [Dbworld] Announcing the release of Timber

We are pleased to announce the release of Timber: a native XML database system developed at the University of Michigan that allows users to store XML data and pose queries using XQuery or algebraic operations. We recognize XML documents to be trees, possibly with links between tree nodes, and build a system to manipulate collections of trees while avoiding the pitfalls of "instance at a time" navigational access. An algebra for XML is developed that manipulates sets of ordered labeled trees. A query (in XQuery) is parsed into an algebraic representation, which can be manipulated in a query optimizer to develop an appropriate query plan to evaluate the query, using new access mthods we have developed for Timber. (The current release only has a limited query optimizer. However, the hooks are present for more sophistiated optimization, which we intend to do in a future release). Timber is available as code in C++ and C#. The project files for visual studio .NET and instructions on how to build the code are provided. Timber allows the user to load XML data into a device and build value based and join indexes to speed up querying. A substantial fragment of XQuery is supported for querying the loaded data, as well as the option of using our logical algebra with pattern tree matchings or using our physical operations with direct data accesses and structural joins. Timber can be accesed via a graphical user interface, used as a command prompt tool or a soap server. For more information, including an overview of the system, related publications, and the instructions to install and use the software, please follow the link http://www.eecs.umich.edu/db/timber/ Please feel free to download, build and use our code. We will appreciate any feedback on it. Please send emails with questions or problems to the timber mailing list (timber-63aXycvo3TyHXe+LvDLADg@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx).
