Subject: [Dbworld] Orders Needed: Fall Pre-release Beta of Readings in DB Systems

SUMMARY
-------
If you'd like your students to have the 4th Edition of the Readings in
Database Systems text this fall, please read on.
-------

Hello:

Mike Stonebraker and I have been working to get the Fourth Edition of
Readings in Database Systems out for some time. A tentative table of
contents is appended. MIT Press will be the publisher of the 4th
Edition, and it should be in stores for the Spring semester, 2005.
However, MIT Press is prepared to do a limited run of "beta" editions
of the book for universities offering courses this fall.

If you would like to use the text this fall, please email me with an
expected number of copies you would need. MIT Press will provide the
beta edition directly. The goal is to price the beta edition close to
unit cost, hopefully including the full contents. We are also
negotiating to get purchasers of the beta text a discount on the full
text when it appears in stores.

If you plan to use the text this fall, please email me
(jmh [AT] cs.berkeley.edu) BY THE END OF THIS WEEK (i.e. Friday 7/23)
with the following:

- Your contact info (email and snail mail)
- Number of books you expect to use

A jpeg of my email address is at
Thanks.
