---------------------------------------------------------

This workshop will focus on the engineering and application
of Semantic Web technologies and standards for the needs of
e-learning and will discuss issues with respect to various
ways of constructing intelligent courseware and modelling
the learner.

SWEL'04 follows the successful workshop on Concepts and
Ontologies in Web-based Educational Systems, held in
conjunctions with ICCE'02 in Auckland, New Zealand.

---------------------------------------------------------
Workshop Goals
---------------------------------------------------------
- To discuss the current state-of-the-art of the applications
of Semantic Web technologies and standards in Intelligent
Educational Systems and e-learning applications.
- To attract the interest of the related research communities
to the problems in educational Web-based systems and serve
as an international platform for knowledge exchange and
cooperation between researchers.
- To provide feedback to educational and Semantic Web
standardization bodies.

---------------------------------------------------------
Workshop Topics
---------------------------------------------------------
Topics of interest include, but are not restricted to:

* Using ontologies and/or Semantic Web technologies within
e-learning applications:
-- to support authoring of WBES;
-- to achieve better personalization/adaptation in WBES;
-- to achieve interoperability of e-learning applications;

* Using Semantic Web services for:
-- e-learning services;
-- user modelling;
-- WBES authoring;

* Web standards issues for WBES
-- combinations of existing Semantic Web and/or
educational standards;
-- mappings between Semantic Web and educational standards;
-- moving LOM and SCORM closer to the Semantic Web;
-- Role of RDF, OWL or TML as a basis for educational
metadata specification languages;

* Ontology engineering and knowledge representation in WBES;

* Semantic Web-based educational applications architectures.

* Real-world systems, case studies and empirical research for WBES.

The topics can be approached from different perspectives:
theoretical, systems engineering, application, case study,
system evaluation, etc. All contributions are required to state
explicitly in the abstract which topic they are addressing.

---------------------------------------------------------
Submission
---------------------------------------------------------
The participants can submit full (up to 16 pages) or short
(up to 4 pages) position papers. The accepted papers will be
published in the workshop proceedings. All papers should be
formatted according to the Springer LNCS guidelines.
Please check the general ISWC'04 page for details:

(*.pdf) format no later than 20 July 2004.

---------------------------------------------------------------
Workshop Proceedings
---------------------------------------------------------------
The papers of the workshop will be printed in add-on to the main
conference proceedings. The proceedings will be also made available
online on the workshop web site. Possibilities will be investigated
to publish the best workshop papers in a special issue of a
refereed journal (e.g. JWE, IJCEELL).
