In its nineteenth edition, SBBD 2004 will be held in Brasilia (DF), Brasil's capital, a modern and planned city, easily accessible from all parts of Brasil, where about 500 attendees are expected. Besides technical sessions, where selected papers are presented, the Symposium also includes invited talks given by distinguished speakers from the international research community, tutorials and short courses. SBBD is organized in cooperation with ACM SIGMOD and has been partially sponsored by the VLDB Endownment. Topics of Interest ------------------ SBBD 2004 invites submissions on a broad range of topics, including research issues in new database applications. Typical topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Active Databases - Authorization and Security - Concurrency Control and Recovery - Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery - Data Semantics - Data Visualization and Databases - Data Warehousing - Database Design - Database Support for Digital Libraries - Electronic Commerce and Databases - Geographical Information Systems - Information Integration and Interoperability - Information Retrieval and Databases - Knowledge Bases - Mobile Data - Multimedia Databases - Object-Orientation and Databases - Parallel and Distributed Databases - Query Languages and User Interfaces - Query Processing and Optimization - Scientific and Statistical Databases - Semi-structured Databases and XML - Spatial Databases - Temporal Databases - Web Database Services Best Paper Award ---------------- The Jose Mauro de Castilho (JMC) award is given, since 1998, to the best paper as selected by the Program Committee. Past winner papers have been published in ACM SIGMOD Record and in the Journal of the Brazilian Computer Society. Jose Mauro de Castilho, who passed away in March 1998, was a professor at UFRGS, the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, where he, as one of the database pioneers in Brasil, helped to form a complete generation of professionals and researchers in the database area. Preliminary Submission Guidelines --------------------------------- Submitted papers can be written in Portuguese or English. However, papers selected for presentation must be written in English in order to be included in the Symposium proceedings. SBBD papers are included in the ACM SIGMOD DiSC and, since last year, are also listed and referenced in DBLP. The proceedings are expected to be published by a major international publisher. Papers submitted to SBBD must not have been simultaneously submitted to any other forum (conference or journal), nor should they have already been published elsewhere. The acceptance of a paper implies that at least one of its authors will register for the symposium to present it. Submitted papers will be reviewed based on originality, relevance, technical soundness and presentation. Further details will soon be available at the Symposium web site.
